Evelyn Waugh

“If it could only be like this always—always summer, always alone, the fruit always ripe.”

It was soaring in London last week, like insanely hot. The tube journey was, er.. sweaty. Sunglasses and suncream in hand! I was a little envious when I headed out for a quick sandwich and passed a packed corner pub, just sitting pretty in the direct sunlight, windows beaming from the sunshine, everyone had big smiles on their faces, lapping up the golden rays and sipping on pints for a cheeky lunch time treat. It’s feel-good weather like this that raises spirits, makes you want to get out of bed in the morning, forces you to call your friends, puts a big ol’ spring into your step. Generally, I feel a much happier person when the sun outside is beaming. Who doesn’t? A little look into the brighter side of life, shall we say. Something we can all do with every now and then.

I’ve had mad summers, mellow summers but I’m reaching the balance. For me, now, it’s about summers to cherish and moments to remember. Summer moments don’t have to be extravagant, expensive, or even over the top, it is the one season where a simple stroll around your local town feels like total bliss.

There are many ways to bask in the sunshine! A favourite local spot of mine is Hitchin Lavender Fields. Aesthetically, it’s a dream. A photographers paradise, one might say. You can also pick the lavender here, which is a lovely bonus. Take it home and pop it in little vases or hang it up in the kitchen. That’s what I love, taking a little piece of that memory home with you. During late summer, they also have a sunflower field that flourishes. On a hot day, it’s just a lovely place to escape. Just pop on a frock, bring a picnic, (kid friendly too) it’s something different to do, which I know we’re all craving from time to time. An impulsive trip out of the schedule? Count me in!

I have a few summer plans up my sleeve. But generally, just going with the flow. Garden centres have been a regular hang-out spot for me (you can tell I’m nearing 30). Long evening walks, places to quietly read, cocktails on street corners, dining al fresco. Doesn’t it all just sound wonderful. Getting out and about, feeling alive and energised, to me, is what summer is all about.
