If you’ve been following my blog for a while you will know that I used to be a BIG Birchbox fan. Big big big! I was a dedicated subscriber for over a year. I always blogged about my monthly packages, month after month, on the dot. Firstly, because well… content. Gotta get that regular content, right? Birchbox is a fantastic way to try brand new or already loved beauty products. Stock up and keep them coming, that’s what I say! Learn more about the concept here. More hilariously, take a look back on my posts and my really inexperienced photography here. Cringe!
Why did I stop? Well, working in beauty is such a blessing and a curse. I was bombarded with so many things to try, it was all getting a bit much. Very ‘woe is me’ I know. But, I felt like I was just shipping everything off to friends and family all of the time. Lucky them. I stopped my Birchbox subscription because I was giving all the goods away and throwing box after box in the bin. It wasn’t great for the environment, or my conscious. The best part about Birchbox is that you can stop or start your subscription at any time. They always preview the up and coming box on social media, so you get a little teaser and then can choose if you want to opt in! An ideal reason for me to give it another go.
When my brother asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I said books and gin (I’m a simple female) and I asked for the December Birchbox, mainly because the Instagram tease had me hook, line and sinker. I love a good plug! I’m a sucker for marketing, naturally. A funny story with this. My brother and I always ask each other very directly what we want for Christmas, because getting what you want is better than getting socks. He had no idea about Birchbox, the concept, or even how to order it! So as siblings do, we hatched a deal, I’ll order the damn thing and you ping me the money. True story. It didn’t take any of the surprise out of it though, luckily it comes tightly sealed in a brown box. Shipped off to my brother for festive wrapping, at best I had hoped. Men and wrapping just don’t mix, let’s face it.
The box decor was a gorgeous combination of pastel pink and midnight navy, topped with bold glittered stars. So pretty, so adorable, so bloody Instagrammable. I used to keep the boxes if I could for various storage options. I’d recently had a little room update with some neutral and blush tones so this box in particular looked great on the side. I popped my daily skincare bits on for easy reach. So handy! I’m used to a Birchbox containing roughly five samples, this is what I used to experience but this was one was jam packed! Not complaining. It had seven and one of which, a delicious Hotel Chocolat tasty treat but unfortunately it didn’t make the photo cut. Went straight into my belly. Hey, I needed the fuel to get snap happy, ok? So, where do I start with the rest?
My favourite item within the box had to go to the liquid lipsticks by Laritzy. Luckily for me, there were a few extra boxes floating around the office so I managed to bag both shades. A brand I had never heard of. When looking at the website it seems to me, a mix of glossier meets Kylie Jenner. Very modern, sassy, appealing to those pastel pink millennial lovers. One shade being a ‘your lips but better’ nude and a dangerously daring darker than dark red named ‘Power’. I adore them both and the lasting power is honestly 10/10. The don’t feel uncomfortable to wear but you know they are there. The formula really sticks to the lips, not in a heavy way, but you have to move quickly when applying. No Instagram scrolling, texting, tindering, just get your arse into gear and apply with no distractions! Trust me on this one.
The other items were also great little finds and perfect for some holiday pampering at the time. There were some brands I already knew, some I didn’t and some products I had heard of just hadn’t yet had a chance to try.
I do love a good mini. I have a hotel stay booked in for March and so the diddy little cleansers and hair products are great to throw in the overnight bag and come along with me. Plus, the sheet mask was just the cherry on the Birchbox, so to speak. Just like any beauty addict at the moment I like to treat myself to one a week and so I’ve added this to my stash, which is sort of getting out of hand. There was a theme over Christmas! Sheet masks aplenty. But it’s okay, cause I’m jumping on the bandwagon with this whole new new year, new skin vibe, or at least that is what I’m hoping for.
Are you a Birchbox lover, new or old? I’d love to know!
